Ingredients for taco seasoning

- Chili powder – you can certainly make your own chili powder if you have an abundance of chili peppers you are looking to preserve. Otherwise buy a brand that contains simple ingredients. We like to stay away from anything that includes anticaking agents, but you can make that choice for yourself. Sometimes the good stuff isn’t available or is down right expensive.
- Cumin – for simplicity we use store bought ground cumin. Also, I’ve tried and failed growing cumin over the years :/ However, if you’ve got no problem growing cumin and have a spice grinder you can make up your own ground cumin for this recipe.
- Onion powder – simple ingredients that you can make at home if you’d like 😀
- Garlic powder
- Dried oregano
- Paprika – if you have sweet peppers in season, dry some of them up to use as paprika 🙂
- Coriander – one of the few herbs I’ve had success growing year after year. Delicious, with a bit of citrus flavor makes this taco seasoning recipe a hit in our home. Grind up the dried seeds in a spice grinder to make your own ground coriander for this recipe.
- Black pepper
- Sea salt – we love Redmond’s Real Salt. It’s absolutely delicious and good for you too!
- Red pepper flakes – this won’t make the taco seasoning spicy. We have young kiddos who aren’t totally onboard with spicy foods yet (me neither!). If you’d like to spice this up add some cayenne to the mix.
Making, using and storing your homemade taco seasoning

Measure out all the ingredients into a small bowl. A cereal bowl is as big as you need here. Mix all the spices together.
If using right away, about 2-3 tbsp per pound of meat works well. Start with 2 tbsp and adjust to your tastes.
Store in a glass jar, we love the 4oz mini Ball jars for storing our homemade spice mixes.
If you’d like to make this taco seasoning low sodium, simply reduce the salt in the recipe. You could eliminate the salt from the taco mix and only sprinkle a pinch of salt over your individual servings. It’s up to you here how much salt you’d like to use, if any at all.
