With simple ingredients this cinnamon rolls recipe comes together in an hour or less, no rise time needed. Made with less sugar and easily adaptable to be totally refined sugar free.
3/4cupbrown sugarcan sub with coconut or date sugar
2tbspground cinnamon
1tspvanilla extract
Cream Cheese Icing
6ozcream cheesesoftened
1/3cupheavy cream
1/3cup maple syrup
1tspvanilla extract
Instructions
Grease a 9x9" or 9x13" baking dish and set aside.
Make the dough
Combine warm water, honey, and yeast in mixing bowl. Sit for a few minutes until bubbly.
Add melted butter, salt and egg to the bowl with the water and stir slightly.
Add half the flour called for and mix until fully combined. Continue adding flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough forms a cohesive ball and isn't too sticky.
Turn dough out on a lightly floured work surface. Knead gently for a minute or two to form a smooth ball. Cover.
Mix the cinnamon sugar filing
In a small bowl mix together the softened butter, ground cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla.
Assemble the rolls
Roll out the dough into a large rectangle, roughly 15"x12".
Spread the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the rolled out dough.
Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut 1" strips into the dough. Roll up each strip and place into your greased baking dish. Continue until all the strips are rolled up and sitting happily in your baking dish. They can be close together but a small gap between rolls is preferable.
Cover the baking dish wish a towel and set aside while the oven preheats to 375F.
Bake cinnamon rolls
Bake the cinnamon rolls at 375F for 20-25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and internal temperature is 190F.
While the rolls are baking, whisk together softened cream cheese, heavy cream, maple syrup and vanilla.
Pour the cream cheese topping over the warm, fresh out of the oven cinnamon rolls and serve.
Notes
For a richer flavor and even more softness, substitute half the water with yogurt or buttermilk. To make this cinnamon rolls recipe refined sugar free, swap out the brown sugar with coconut sugar or date sugar.
