Making bread from scratch is such a rewarding and budget loving skill to have. But… lets face it, sometimes you just need bread and you need it quick. These quick honey butter burger buns are the perfect recipe to whip together in a pinch. (No waiting for the dough to rise.) Best of all, they are so tasty, super soft, and perfect with your favorite home grilled burger.

Ingredients to make honey butter burger buns

ingredients for honey butter burger buns
  • All purpose, organic, unbleached flour – you can definitely substitute the all purpose flour for your favorite blend of whole grains to make these quick honey butter burger buns super nutrient dense. Or maybe you don’t love whole grain breads but want to make this a little healthier. In that case combining whole wheat flour and all purpose will still give you super soft buns.
  • Warm water – between 100 and 110F will do the trick.
  • Active dry yeast – we prefer to buy our yeast in one pound packages that we store in the fridge after opening. It lasts a long time and is so much more affordable and convenient then using the yeast that comes in packets.
  • Butter – real from the cream of a cow butter. Unless you have another dairy animal that gives you butter, then by all means 🙂 For the love of all that is right in this world, don’t touch that new lab made “butter”. I don’t care how “renewable” it is. You cannot convince me that food made in labs in better than the food made from healthy animals on fresh green grass.
  • Honey or maple syrup – raw local honey is going to be the tastiest, in my opinion. Plus it’s a great way to support your local agriculture. Because, yeah Bill Gates, that’s important! If you are planning to feed some of these buns to a child under the age of one use maple syrup. Babies under the age of one cannot digest honey.
  • Sea salt – we love and only recommend Redmond’s Real Salt. It’s an American company, American salt, and it’s so delicious.
  • Eggs, one for the dough and one for the egg wash. Pastured eggs have the most nutritional content, but they are expensive. Don’t get hung up over the ideal when you can’t afford it.

How to make quick burger buns

For the dough

First off, we need to activate the yeast. Mix together the warm water, honey or maple syrup, and yeast in a medium sized mixing bowl. Allow it to sit for about five minutes or so until the mixture is foamy.

Then add your melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix that together to evenly distribute the salt, cause salt pockets aren’t the most pleasant things to eat.

Next, add the flour. Start with half of the flour called for and then add one cup at a time until you reach the right consistency. You want the dough to be easy to work with and not too sticky.

Sprinkle a clean work surface with flour and knead your bread dough for about two minutes. You want to form a smooth, tight dough ball.

Now, without letting the dough rise, portion the dough into twelve equal-ish pieces. I do this by shaping the dough into a log and cutting that into three sections. Then, I take each section and shape it into a ball that I quarter. This gives you twelve mostly even sized pieces of dough. If you find that one ball of dough is a little bigger than another, just pinch some dough off a reallocate it to the smaller one.

Shape each piece of dough into a ball and place on a baking sheet. For the ease of cleaning up I like to line my baking sheet with parchment paper, but feel free to grease a baking sheet with butter or some other oil instead.

Cover the buns with a towel and set aside while the oven preheats.

Finishing touches

Crack an egg into a small bowl and beat for a minute or two. Once the oven has finished preheating, brush some of the egg onto the top of each bun.

Now, you can sprinkle on some sesame seeds, everything but the bagel seasoning or some cracked black pepper. It’s totally optional, you can be really creative here or you can leave the tops plain.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until the tops are beautifully golden brown and the internal temperature is 190F.

And voila! There you have it, quick, simple and delicious homemade burger buns. Although, why limit these to burgers? They go great with pulled pork, chicken or egg salads, even some peanut butter and jelly.

But lets say you are planning on hotdogs as well as the burgers. Well then by all means turn this dough into some delicious hotdog buns. Just roll them into logs instead of balls. 😊

If you give these a try, let me know how you like them in the comments below.

Happy baking 😊

Cook Time 15 minutes mins
Additional Time 10 minutes mins
Servings: 12 buns
Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water approximately 100F
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or another oil
  • 2 large eggs, divided one for dough, one for egg wash
  • 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 3 1/2 – 4 cups all purpose flour organic, unbleached

Method

  1. Combine warm water, honey, and yeast in a mixing bowl. Allow to sit for 5 minutes or until foamy.
  2. Stir in melted butter, one egg, and sea salt to yeast mixture.
  3. Mix in two cups of flour into the wet ingredients. When fully incorporated add more flour, one cup at a time until the dough forms a cohesive ball and isn't too sticky to work with.
  4. Sprinkle flour onto clean work surface. Turn dough onto the floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes to form a smooth dough ball.
  5. Divide the dough into twelve equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place on a greased or lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover the burger buns with a towel and set aside. Preheat oven to 425F.
  7. Crack an egg into a small bowl and lightly beat it.
  8. Once the oven is done preheating, brush the tops of the burger buns with egg wash. If desired sprinkle the egg washed buns with sesame seeds or cracked black pepper.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and internal temperature is 190F.
  10. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before enjoying 🙂

Notes

See post for tips on dividing the dough into 12 portions without pulling out a kitchen scale.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days or in the fridge for a week.
You could also freeze the burger buns for use at a later date. To reheat, place on baking sheet and cover with aluminum foil. Set oven temperature to about 300F and allow them to defrost/warm up for 15-20 minutes. If reheating from the fridge, 325F for 5 minutes covered will be sufficient.
