If you’ve been canning for any length of time, you’ve probably come across more than one rusty old ring. Instead of throwing those rings away, (which I’m totally guilty of), why not upcycle them into adorable Christmas tree ornaments? Or, if your looking for festive crafts to do with your kids, this is a great option. These mason jar ring ornaments are a fun family friendly craft you’ll be happy to hang on your Christmas tree this season.

Supplies For Mason Jar Ornaments
First off, find yourself some canning rings. Because we don’t want to waste our older, rustier rings we chose to use those for this project. Use a combination of regular and wide mouth sizes.

Then you’ll need some jute twine and hot glue. A good pair of wire cutters is really helpful when cutting up your florals. A spoon or chopstick are also super handy when gluing on the jute twine so you don’t burn your fingers on the hot glue.
The florals and ribbon we picked up from hobby lobby. You can really use anything that catches your eye when it comes to decorating your mason jar ring ornaments. However, if you’d like to use what we did, this is the holly berries (a little goes a long way) we used, the snowy pine, and ribbon. They’re currently having a 50% off sale for all of their Christmas decor, making this project super budget friendly.

Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies and decorations, it’s time to make some adorable, handmade mason jar ring ornaments.
Preparing rings
Step one: Wash and dry your rings. This might not be the most necessary step since you won’t be using this near anything containing food. However, our rings tend to sit in our garage until we need them and you never know what kind of critter might have found it’s way through your ring stash. Not one to be a germaphobe, but I did find a mummified rodent in a basket of rings once… 🥲
Step two: Attach jute twine to ring and wrap it up. Cut yourself a good length of jute twine. It’s okay if it isn’t long enough to wrap the whole ring. Bundle up the loose end of the twine so you can easily move the twine around the whole. If, or when really, you run out of twine, glue the end to the inside of the ring and attach another length of twine to continue wrapping the ring. Once you get all the way around, glue the end of the twine on the inside of the ring.

With our rings now cozy in their jute twine blankets, it’s time to decorate our mason jar ring ornaments.
Assembling Ornaments
You can do whatever your heart fancies when it comes to decorating your ring ornaments. If you’d like to do what we did, then here’s how.
First, cut up your holly berries and a couple holly leaves. Add a dollop of glue on the outside of a ring and attach the leaves as shown. For the regular mouth size a stem of 3 berries seemed to work perfect, while the wide mouth rings had 5 berries on each stem.

Add another dollop of glue in the middle of the two holly leaves you just placed on the ring. Attach each stem to that glue going up either side of the ring. You can bend the stems so that they go up the ring instead of straight out to the sides. For longer stems of berries, add another dollop of glue halfway up the berry stem.
Finally, detach a pinecone from the snowy pine pick and glue it on the middle of the holly berry stems.

With that done, we can attach our ribbon and call it a day 🙂 Cut a length of ribbon about 10-12″ long. Tie it onto the mason jar ring ornament and then knot the top. Cut off any excess ribbon, and voila! A super simple, easy DIY Christmas ornament.

Again, you can decorate these however you desire. Even just a simple bow makes for a lovely mason jar ring ornament for your tree. You could also add a small bell inside the ornament, snowflakes or snowmen.
Including your kids in the project
It can be hard to include your kids sometimes. They are so creative in their own rights that they can sometimes try to impose that on your own crafting. So, to make everyone happy, make sure there’s plenty of rings and decorations to go around.
I’ve found that making my project first helps me let go of any perfectionism I might want to impose on my kids projects.
Pre cut the florals so your kids can jump right into decorating in whatever way their little hearts desire. Man the hot glue gun for kiddo’s who are too young to use it properly. In no time your kids will be showing off their zany designs to their siblings and friends.

Christmas is a season that we love most of all in our home. Singing songs praising our Lord and the miracle of His birth while decorating our home for the season is the greatest way to end every year.
If you have some old mason jar rings around go ahead and make some memories, and adorable decorations in your own home.
Happy crafting! 💕
